What is S/MIME?
S/MIME (Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions) is a standard for public key encryption and signing of MIME data. It allows us to send secure emails, ensuring that our communications are confidential, authentic, and tamper-proof.
Installing S/MIME
To start using S/MIME, you need to install a digital certificate that supports S/MIME encryption. Here’s how to do it:
- Obtain a digital certificate from a trusted Certificate Authority (CA).
- Install the certificate in your email client following the CA's instructions.
- Once installed, send us your public key. This will establish an S/MIME encryption channel between us.
If you do not have S/MIME set up, you can still benefit from our emails. Even without encryption, you can be assured that our messages are tamper-proof and come from us, as indicated by the digital signature checkmark.
How S/MIME Works
When we send an email using S/MIME, the process involves several steps:
- The sender (Fyzno) encrypts the email using the recipient's public key, which ensures that only the recipient can decrypt it with their private key.
- A digital signature is created using the sender's private key, allowing the recipient to verify the sender's identity and confirm that the message has not been altered.
However, encryption is only established after both parties have exchanged their public keys. Until then, the email can still be sent with a digital signature, ensuring that it is tamper-proof and verifiable.
